Moving Toward Change with Forward Momentum

At Forward Momentum Chicago, dance is much more than just movement—it’s a powerful catalyst for change, community, and personal growth. This Dance in Our Schools Month, Ingenuity is thrilled to highlight their incredible programming—from classroom residencies to formal studio training, Forward Momentum offers a variety of dance experiences for all ages and ability levels.

Founded with the mission of providing dance education to children and communities with limited arts access, Forward Momentum prioritizes schools in Chicago’s south and southwest neighborhoods, ensuring equitable access to high-quality dance programs. Their curriculum is rooted in National Common Core Standards, National Arts Standards, and 21st Century Learning, with a strong emphasis on Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) to help students grow emotionally, socially, and academically.

Ingenuity is proud to have supported Forward Momentum through Ingenuity’s Creative Schools Fund, which has helped fund their impactful dance programming in CPS schools. With over 45,000 children served, Forward Momentum is making a transformational impact, empowering students to express themselves, build confidence, and experience the power of community through dance.

Founder and Executive Director, Pierre Lockett, a former Joffrey Ballet dancer, has led Forward Momentum with a vision of creating accessible dance programs that bridge cultural and social divides. Their programs, including the Hot Chocolate Nutcracker, celebrate diversity and bring people together through dance. As Pierre says, “Dance is a catalyst for many things—it can literally save lives, provide space for self-expression, and create a strong sense of community and belonging.”

Whether it’s a one-day workshop or a year-long residency, Forward Momentum tailors its programs to meet the needs of students, ensuring every child has the opportunity to thrive through dance. 🌟

When we invest in the arts, we invest in the future.
