The Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Learning Center is both the museum’s department and space focused on bringing young people and the adults around them into dynamic and inspiring encounters with art and creativity. The Ryan Learning Center team: champions the role of art and culture in people’s lives promotes access and equitable participation in art and the museum fosters critical and creative thinking.

The Ryan Learning Center’s Teacher Professional Learning is grounded in our student-centered, dialogic, inquiry-based, and multi-modal pedagogy with a focus on literacy and the close-reading of images. Our teaching further supports cross-curricular arts integration strategies, team building, and students’ social emotional development including through productive classroom conversations. Workshops and curricula align with K-12 Illinois State standards for arts, language arts, and social science. Professional Learning sessions can be custom designed to the teaching and learning needs of your group and facilitated in the Ryan Learning Center or at your school or program site. Curricular resources, artwork reproductions, and information on additional opportunities including free educator-led museum tours and bus scholarships for Chicago Public Schools and Big Shoulders Fund schools, are also provided.
